There are 2 different welding systems depending on the material:
A flux or protective atmosphere is not required and the short welding time prevents heat built up and permits welding of studs to thin metal sections without discoloration and burn through. Minimum weld penetration permits many dissimilar metals to be welded with acceptable strength and metallurgical features. The stud welding process is very simple and no specially trained or skilled men are required.
In case of C.D. Studs, the welding end is provided with a small cylinder or conical tip that is used to initiate the welding arc. Tip design is extremely important, since the tip and shape will influence the weld strength and other factors. Basic stud design is given in DIN, EN, and ISO standard 13918 [1998]. The three basic designs of Stud Welding: C.D. Studs are threaded stud, unthreaded stud and tapped stud. A variety of special designs and coatings for applications are also available.
