American Pipe Threads Fittings are larger in diameter. It provides additional strength. Threads -PTF have a taper like SAE-LT threads to provide a leak proof installation. These threads are designated by nominal pipe diameter. The 1/8" PTF Thread is actually about 3/8" diameter. The 1/4" PTF Thread is about 1/2" diameter. A tapped hole is required for installation. 1/4" PTF threads are widely used for larger bearings on farm machinery and heavy industrial equipments.
