They are used chiefly for protection of bearings or other key parts from any contamination, as well as for retaining grease. Rubber made V-Rings/ V-seals can effectively function in dry applications - those with very low torque.
The Rubber made V-Rings/ V-seals consist of three major parts - a body, a hinge and a conical self-adjusting lip. While in service, the seal`s elastic body rotates along with the shaft. VA style V-rings are probably among the most common types and are employed in appliances as well as conveyor rollers. Widening the body of the above type will result in the expanded body plus tapered heel of the V-ring in place on the shaft. These types of V-rings are utilized in automotive applications. V-rings can well tolerate greater radial variation than a traditional shaft seal. V-rings can also tolerate greater `shaft-to-bore` misalignment and a greater `dynamic run-out` than any standard shaft seal. It can function effectively as both a seal & a slinger.
