A rotary evaporator [or rotavap] is a device used for the efficient and gentle removal of solvents from samples by evaporation. The key components of a rotary evaporator are the water bath, rotary evaporator, glassware, vacuum pump and circulating chiller. The evaporating flask rotates in the water bath, allowing for more surface area and easier evaporation. The condenser has cooled liquid moving through it, which allows the solvent to condense in the receiving flask. The vacuum pump reduces the vapour pressure within an evaporation system, allowing the sample to boil at a lower temperature and thus leads to faster evaporation. The circulating chillers provide cooled water through the condenser to lower the temperature of the solvent being boiled off so that it condenses in the receiving flask. Bumping of the sample may cause loss of the sample and can be controlled via vapour pressure or temperature of the water bath. Sample remains in the evaporation flask.
