In order to match the machining process [self-adapting] this high-performance coating modifies its own roughness or surface smoothness, thereby increasing the tool life travel by up to 50 per cent above that of conventional standard coatings. The iq plus coating comprises a double layer: each of these two layers is optimised - or optimises itself - for particular functions. The first coating layer is an aitin base layer containing with high aluminum content, applied directly to the substrate, giving the tool high resistance to wear and to high temperatures. The structure of the substrate`s surface roughness, however, is replicated through this layer. A somewhat less hard top coat [based on tin] is applied on top to smooth this out. Depending on the torque and the chip flow, the new `iq plus`layer levels itself very quickly in use.
