The locking cap rotates on the ridges of the flexible tubing. It obtains locking force from the spring compression of the tubing. The Probe is kept under this force against the bottom of the adapter well, assuring rapid heat transfer to the thermocouple. Thermocouples with type K calibration have a welded tip. All other elements codes are for silver soldered tipped probes for faster response.
