It is used to test various types of electrical windings and electric machines to know if there is any fault or insulation defect. In this test, high voltage pulse/surge is applied to the winding under test and voltage decay waveform is compared with waveform of identical winding. If winding is healthy then both waveforms will be identical. Depending upon the type of defect the waveform will differ. Surge tester scans through the entire insulation system and detects insulation faults such as turn-to-turn; layer-to layer; coil-to-coil winding-to-winding and phase shorts as well as open circuits and grounds. It is ideal for testing of coils, chokes stator, armature, etc and is available in different ranges such as 0-3 kV, 0-5 kV, 0-10 kV.
