Chemical conversion coating formulations are based on hexavalent chromium [cr6 +]. However, a new, cr6 + -free process is now available in india for eco-friendly passivation of aluminum and its alloys. The new, trivalent-chromium [cr3 +] based process [tcp process] does not use any toxic chemicals and its performance matches or exceeds that of well established, cr6 + -based passivation processes for aluminum and its alloys. Besides, the tcp process offers excellent corrosion protection and serves as an excellent base-coat for organic coatings such as painting and lacquering. This room-temperature passivation process gives bare corrosion resistance, low electrical contact resistance and excellent adhesion of topcoats. The process is effective on a variety of materials based on plain and anodised aluminium and its alloys and finds application in electrical and electronic, automotive, aerospace, construction, architecture, bicycle, packaging, engineering and marine industries. Its range of applications is continuously growing. The process is very simple to use, maintain and operate. Effluent treatment costs are negligible.
