Kerala state electronics development corp has introduced metal oxide varistors [movs] to its range of electronic components. Varistors are voltage dependent non-linear devices, which have an electrical behaviour similar to back-to-back zener diodes. The varistor impedance changes many orders of magnitude from a near open circuit to a highly conductive level when exposed to high voltage transients, thus clamping the transient voltage to a safe level. Movs have high surge absorption capability, very low standby current, wide operating temperature range and are suitable for both ac and dc operations. It finds typical applications in smps and ballast circuits, telecommunications, consumer electronics, industrial electronics, medical electronics,power distribution and controls. These movs are manufactured by keltron electro-ceramics ltd, kuttippuram, kerala, the largest domestic manufacturer of disc ceramic capacitors and ntc thermistors.
