Thermocouples type r [pt rh 13 percent -pt] and type s [pt rh 10 percent -pt] are used to measure temperature up to 1400c/1600"c maximum; type b [pt rh 6 percent -pt rh 30 percent or pt 18] is for temperatures up to 1800c max; and type "c [tungsten 5 percent rhenium/tungsten
26 percent rhenium] for temperatures up to 2300c max.
The thermo-element pair is protected by two or three ceramic/silicon carbide sheaths of various types, depending upon working temperature and environmental conditions. Type ker 610- alumina tube with 60 percent , 80 percent , 95 percent ai,o,; type ker 710 - recrystallised - high alumina tube with 99.5 percent , 99.9 percent a1203 available in 24,20,15,12,10,8 and 6 mm diameter. Holding tubes made of ss 304/ss 316 of 32, 25 and 20 mm diameter are used to hold ceramic sheath with head. Steatite ceramic terminal blocks with nickel-plated terminals; and die cast aluminium/ss mounting head and adjustable flange. These sensors are widely used in glass, ceramic, steel, power plants, etc.
