All aluminium pigments can be divided into two general categories, i.E., leafing and non-leafing.
In leafing pigments, the aluminium flakes orient themselves in a continuous layer at or near the surface of the film, producing an opaque silver finish.
The appearance can vary from a coarse, white look to a dark, highly spectacular, or mirror like look
Grades of leafing aluminium pigments with large flakes provide the least amount of hiding and a coarse texture, but a white finish.
Non-leafing aluminium pigments are also available in acid resistant grades, used in coatings to minimize the effects of industrial fumes, acid rain, bird droppings, or other undesirable environmental circumstances.
They are used primarily in roof coatings, maintenance and trade sales coatings where barrier protection is a critical concern. .
