Sarasons engineering industries is a manufacturer and exporter of specialty teflon products. An expander ring when added to a plastic ring will provide it with more initial tension and improve its sealing characteristics. Ring tension is most often obtained from the ring itself.
However, in some instances - if the cross section is light, or the ring material is soft, or if the ring is segmental - a separate spring may be needed to supply radial force to the ring.
